A Brief History of our School

Methodist Central College was the first educational institution in Batticaloa and the first English Boys School in Ceylon (established). It was founded in 1814 by the Rev. William Ault, one of the pioneer Methodist Missionaries who came from England to Sri Lanka (Ceylon).
Indeed, the Association is proud to declare tonight as the first major fundraising venture under the current Executive. Therefore, on behalf of the Methodist Central College Old Boys Association of North American Chapter, I take great pleasure in extending sincere thanks to our special patrons, guests, and fellow OBA members for their support in making this event a great success.

We are pleased to publish this article on the historic occasion of marking the bicentenary of the Methodist Central College, Batticaloa and the arrival of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionaries to Ceylon.
The missionaries sailed to Ceylon from Portsmouth harbour in the United Kingdom on 30 December 1813 and alighted in Ceylon on 29 June 2014. They encountered several setbacks, including the death of the mission leader, Rev. Dr Thomas Coke, and Mrs Ault, wife of one of the missionaries, but their resilience, enthusiasm and determination as well as their faith in God enabled them to fulfil their goals.

The founder - Rev. William Ault
Rev.William Ault, the son of Jabez Ault, shoemaker, was born in West Bromwich, Warwickshire, in 1778. By the age of seven he had read the bible and a decade later he was jointly running a Sunday school in his home town. He entered the ministry in 1808 and not long after expressed an interest in assisting Thomas Coke with any overseas missionary work. Read More...
